After the popular hot yoga trend stretched its way through bodies across the globe, the fitness scene at F3 is heating up yet again. If you’re hearing a lot about infrared heat therapy but aren’t quite sure if it’s for you, the science behind these amazing benefits might persuade you to perspire.
What is Infrared Heat?
Infrared uses a type of light invisible to the naked eye. These light waves produce infrared radiation and the skin recognizes it as heat.
How does Infrared work?
Far Infrared (FIR) heating has become increasingly popular. Because it heats objects directly in its path, your skin, clothing, and the surrounding atmosphere, an ideal temperature can be maintained bypassing the bright light of near infrared (NIR). In an FIR environment, the floor, equipment, and your body will feel warm to the touch. As contrasted with steam or hot air, radiant heat is an efficient, eco-friendly, and cost-effective alternative to heating a studio or work out room, and does not pollute the air. FIR transmits heat in a specific way that our skin is naturally intended to absorb like sunlight. This radiant warmth induces relaxation and enjoyment while allowing the body to heat up naturally and you reap the health benefits.
What are the benefits?
Our bodies experience far infrared energy as a gentle radiant heat which can penetrate up to 1.5 inches beneath the skin. Using an infrared room to work out or practice moves, means muscles warm up and relax more quickly, which allow the body to flex up to three times more fully.
The vibrational effect stimulates blood flow which results in increased circulation, improved oxygenation of vital organs and naturally ridding the body of toxins. In an article by heavy metals detox expert Wendy Myers, we ingest and are surrounded daily by toxic chemicals called obesogens that promote weight gain and prevent weight loss. Using infrared heat technology allows a person to sweat out those fattening chemical toxins, promoting weight loss.
The warming aspect of light waves aids in unclenching muscles which improves the range of flexibility, reduces muscle soreness and alleviates pain. Heat exposure increases blood flow throughout the body, which can reduce inflammation while enhancing the ability to detox. Additionally, FIR Improves mood, mental health, and cognitive function. If users are exposed to FIR in the late afternoon, the body has time to cool down before bedtime, which can improve sleep patterns.
Is Far Infrared safe?
While the term radiation has negative connotations for many people, we’re surrounded by various forms of low-level radiation from object every day. This includes rocks, soil, cell phones, microwaves, and even our own bodies. The infrared spectrum of energy lies between visible light and invisible microwaves. The safety of infrared heat has been embraced for decades by the medical community and considered therapeutic. It has been used for relieving aches, muscle soreness and increasing circulation and a myriad of other maladies. One study discovered that after constant exposure to FIR, wound healing quickened significantly.
